Check your muffler and exhaust pipe for holes and also check your manifold gasket it may need replacing, exhaust fumes smell like faint fuel, if there is not leak this could be the problem.
This could be caused by a few different things....check the purge canister if the vehicle has one.....also check the fuel pressure regulator for a leaking diaphram.The air conditioning is "sucking" the fumes in from the purge canister or the pressure regulator.
Any fuel leak in the engine compartment can transfer into the cabin when the a/c is turned on. I doubt the exhaust would be confused with fuel but that's just my nose. Some vehicles have common recall problems such as the intrepid for fuel rails leaking. you should never smell fuel

I have the same issue with our Subaru Outback 1996. Our mechanic said we should replace the Fuel Vapor storage Canister. This is a carbon filter that stores fuel vapors that leak out of the tank. If it gets clogged with fuel on a hot day the vapor is going to leak out when you're at a stop and get pulled into the car by the AC.

I have a 1990 Buick Century 3300. Just replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator. It was leaking gas. Replace the vacum lines to the Fuel Pressure Regulator but I still smell gas inside on the driver's side compartment. The smell goes away when opening the windows. Where would there be a fuel leak that would cause the raw gas smell inside the car but not outside of the car?

Smell of gas?
If you smell gas from your vehicle it probably indicates a leak. Even a tiny leak will produce a fuel smell. If there is nothing obvious leaking from the fuel lines, pull the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator, if there is any smell of fuel there or if gas is present, it is leaking and needs to be replaced.

Your fuel pump is probably really dirty and your fuel injection probably needs to be replaced. I had that same problem with my 96 Tahoe and when i would idle it would reek of fuel. I went to get all those things replaces, and not only did the smell go away, but my mpg's went up about 3 or 4 g's. take it for a tune up!
