The vehicle may shut off during use if the fuel pump relay goes bad. But it could go bad and the relay shuts off, or the relay gets stuck open (which does not happen often). if the relay gets stuck open then most likely the fuel pump will not shut off (unless the relay is removed) which is dangerous. Also it all completely depends on the wiring of the car. Also, if the fuel pump relay goes bad and shuts off, the vehicle may not start back up until it is replaced.
Fuel pump or fuel relay is going
Bad fuel pump relays aren't very common but i do run across them every now and then. If the relay is bad one of 2 things will happen - if the relay is "open" (unable to complete the circuit)then the fuel pump will not run and the car will fail to start. If the fuel pump is shorted (the contacts in the relay are fused together)then the fuel pump will never shut off...even if you shut the car off and the key is in your hand the fuel pump will continue to run until the battery is drained of voltage. Then the car will not start without charging the battery or "jumping" the car. About the worst thing a bad fuel pump can do to your car is cause it not to start. It could possibly ruin your battery if the battery sits discharged too long. However the odds on that are not great. Just charge the battery - change out the bad fuel pump relay and everything should be OK.
can a fuel relay fuse make car not start? If the fuse or the relay is bad, yes.
No. The auto shutdown relay powers the fuel system.
Remove the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump fuse.
Bad fuel pump, blown fuel pump fuse, bad fuel pump relay, or clogged filter.
Bad fuel Pump? Bad fuel pump relay? Plugged fuel filter?
The fuel pump relay is also the fuel shut off relay. When you turn the key on, the fuel pump should run for 2 seconds then shut off unless the car starts. Easiest way I've found is to use starting fluid (ether) SPARINGLY! If the engine will start after using ether, then die, it's probably the fuel pump.
Yes it could.
The relays along the firewall will make your car engine not to start. The fuel pump relay is what turns on the fuel pump when you start your car and powers it down when you shut off the ignition. The engine control module (ECM) uses the fuel pump relay to control when the fuel pump is on. The fuel pump relay supplies electricity to power up and power down the fuel pump. Once the points burn or the coil breaks, the incoming voltage to the fuel pump is blocked and your car engine cannot start. If engine takes a long time to crank up, it probably is due to a bad fuel pump relay. Another way you can tell the fuel pump relay is bad is when you don't hear the fuel pump run for a couple of second when you turn the key in the ignition forward to start the car.
there is no fuel shut off for your cavalier but if you look in the fuse panel inside your car or under the hood you might find a relay or a fuse marked fuel pump and that should shut it off
No, not unless the relay is stuck closed. It will then run but the pump will overheat and self destruct.
