The motor may or may not be in time. It is possible the motor is in time and either the head gasket is not sealing or is bad. Also the piston rings may not be placed on the piston correctly or you may have a case of short-timers and forget them entirely (trust me, it happens to the best). I would start by making sure the rings and gaskets are in place and installed properly first then look at the timing. In my experience even a motor that is out of time still has some compression. 10-28-08 As above, it's more likely that compression loss is due to ring/valve/gasket issues. A quick check for proper timing would be to look at the flywheel key. If it's broken, it's out of time. If it's good, it's 100% perfectly timed. B&S engines all have fixed timing. Also, when doing a comp test, make sure you're 15-20 degrees PAST TDC on compression stroke, otherwise the de-comp will be on. Do a leak-down next!

How do you set the timing on 17hp HOV Briggs and Stratton?

The timing is not adjustable. The only way the engine can be out of time is if the keyway between the crankshaft and the flywheel is sheared. If it is in place and in good shape the engine will be in time.

Why is white smoke coming out of the car's exhaust?

First, check your engine oil level- if the level reduces at agiven time-problem is that you have a loose compression. The white smoke is the product of combustion of air, gasoline, and engine oil due to the excessive wear on the engine's piston rings. Second, to confirm if you have a loose compression, go to your mechanic and ask for a compression test.

Briggs and Stratton easy spin 6301115?

TM 5-4240-501-14&P THEORIES OF OPERATION"Easy Spin Starting" "EASY SPIN" STARTING Good compression is necessary in order to obtain the full horsepower of the engine but at the same time this makes it more difficult to turn the engine over fast enough to start it. The resistance of compression is most noticeable during the first few revolutions after which the momentum of the flywheel and crankshaft help until firing starts in the cylinder. In order to reduce this resistance during starting time, various types of compression releases have been used. However, none proved entirely satisfactory until Briggs & Stratton developed the "Easy Spin" starting system. This is so simple one wonders why it was never thought of before. The intake lobe on the cam gear is ground with a small ramp which holds the intake valve open 1/100 of an inch for a tiny fraction of the compression stroke. At slow starting speed the interval of time that the valve is open is relatively long and therefore enough air escapes to noticeable reduce the compression. However, at operating speeds the interval of time is so short that there is practically no escape and therefore horsepower is unimpaired. Actually at 3600 RPM the valve is opened for a mere 1/200 of a second. In all other respects the valves operate as in any other four stroke cycle engine. The force required to start an engine is reduced by 50% with "Easy Spin" and would be noticed most by a person who has difficulty starting the ordinary engine. One thing we must remember. When testing the compression of "Easy Spin" engine one must spin the flywheel "backward", in the opposite direction to normal rotation. This will bring the compression stroke on the opposite side of the cam lobe and allow you to feel the compression. 18 14

How do you time a 4hf1 Isuzu engine?

Hi,iv'e got a 4hf1 isuzu. What will the correct compression reading be if i do a test on the engin?

When to rebuild the car engine?

it is hard to state when is the right time to rebuild or replace a veh engine .but here is the best answer to my knowlege you would have to find info on your veh engine spec's have a known good mechanic performe a manual compression test and determing if veh has low compression then you can rely on this for your sence if to replace or not ,..

Why its startup fine then when the engine is warm starts the miss on 4?

Warm the engine up and then perform a compression test on each cylinder 1 at a time. Check for similar compression. Check condition of spark plugs, looking for oil deposits etc... swap plugs to different cylinders.

How do i know if my 1997 Mercury sable 3.0 jumped time?

That engine uses a timing chain. Chances are very slim that the chain jumped time. However if it did jump time the engine would not run and the engine would have no compression. Tell us what the symptoms are.

What repair is needed on a 5.0 hp Briggs and straiten engine when the engine revs up and down the whole time it is running and the Governor rod is going in and out?

Most common culprit in surging is a dirty/clogged air filter.

350 motor that keeps blowing oil in the carb what do you do?

It is time for an engine overhaul. The pistion rings/ oil rings and compression rings are either broken are worn out. That is called blow-by. Your engine is done.

What is the firing pressure inside of the cylinder of a Chevrolet 305 V8 running 2500 rpm's?

It is the same as it is when you check the compression when the engine is not running. It does not change. It will only get worse as engine wears with time and as miles start adding up on the engine.

Why during the ignition pressure remain constant in diesel engine?

The ignition temperature, (temperature at which diesel fuel ignites) is 490*F. This temperature corresponds to a set compression of the gasses in the cylinder of the engine. Some, but not all, diesel engines have glow plugs to initially warm the air when you first start the engine because the temperature of the air in the diesel engine is too cold to get the ignition temperature simply from compression. while the engine is running the compression heats the air to the ignition temperature. This compression (or pressure) is the same each time the cylinder fires. Using the universal gas law you can find that corresponding compression versus the ambient temperature and pressure. Typically this will occur at approximately 16 bars. Almost all diesel engines are designed to operate at a compression ratio of 15:1 - 20:1, less if supercharged or turbocharged.
