Franklin D.Roosevelt was born on January 30,1882,in Hyde Park,New York.He was the only child of James and Sara Roosevelt.In 1896,he entered Groton School.Four years later,Roosevelt entered Harvard University.In 1901,his distant cousin Teddy became president.In 1904,Roosevelt entered Columbia University Law School.In 1905,he got married to Eleanor Roosevelt.In 1907,Roosevelt became a New York City lawyer.In 1910,he was elected to the New York State Senate.In 1913,Roosevelt was appointed the assistant secretary of the navy.In 1920,he ran for vice president but lost the election.In 1921,Roosevelt contracted polio.In 1927,he established the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation.In 1928,Roosevelt was elected governor of New York.In 1932,the Democrats chose him to be their candidate.They chose House Speaker John Garner of Texas to be their vice presidential candidate.Later that year,he defeated Herbert Hoover in a landslide.On March 4,1933,Roosevelt was sworn in as the 32nd President of the United States.In his first one hundred days,he announced his New Deal to help fight the Great Depression.By 1936,happy days were here again.Later that year,Roosevelt won re-election defeating Kansas governor Alf Landon.On January 20,1937,he was sworn in as president for the second time.In 1939,Germany invaded Poland.It was the beginning of World War 2.In 1940,the Democrats chose Roosevelt to run again.The Democrats chose agriculture secretary Henry Wallace of Iowa to be their vice presidential candidate.Later that year,he was elected to a third term in office defeating Wendell Willkie.On January 20,1941,Roosevelt was sworn in as president for the third time.On December 7,1941,the Japanese attacked the U.S.naval base at Pearl Harbor.On December 8,1941,the United States declared war on Japan.On December 11,1941,Germany and Italy declared war on the United States.In 1942,Roosevelt issued executive order authorizing relocation of Japanese-Americans.In 1943,he signed an income tax bill.In 1944,the Democrats chose Roosevelt to run for president again.The Democrats chose Senator Harry S.Truman of Missouri to be their vice presidential candidate.By that time,Roosevelt was now 62 years old and his health was failing.Later that year,he was elected to a fourth term defeating New York governor Thomas Dewey.In 1945,he was sworn in for the fourth time.In February 1945,Roosevelt went to a conference in Yalta to end the war.On April 12,1945,just before the war ended and only three months after beginning his fourth term,Roosevelt died of a stroke bringing an end to the longest U.S. presidencys.He is remembered mostly for ending the Great Depression.The End!
