Jeff Smith was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1939. He graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 1962, and Drew University in 1965. He began his career as a minister in the United Methodist Church in 1965, and became a chaplain at the University of Puget Sound in 1966. He was married to his wife Patricia "Patty" Smith in 1966. He opened a restaurant in Tacoma, Washington in 1972, and it was called Chaplain's Pantry Restaurant and Gourmet Shop. He made his television debut in 1973 on Cooking Fish Creatively, produced by KTPS-TV, Tacoma, Washington. His first cookbook was published in 1977 called Recipes from The Frugal Gourmet. He moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1983 to create another cooking show: The Frugal Gourmet with Jeff Smith produced by WTTW Chicago. He died in 2004 at age 65.
