Typically a bad capacitor is a sign of a weakening Compressor in the unit. Rule of thumb: If the unit is 20+ years old, you would be putting a band aid on it by replacing the capacitor. If you decide to try and get by with an older system for a few more seasons, I recommend to put a new capacitor on the unit with a hard start system installed on the compressor. You can normally have this done for under $300.00. And back to your question; capacitors are sized depending on the size of the unit. Check your tonage of the unit and bring the capacitor with the correct tonage to a Parts house and they will make sure it is properly sized. Hope this helps.

Can you replace 470 16v to a 470 35v capacitor?

Yes, you can replace a 470 µF, 16V capacitor with a 470 µF, 35V capacitor. The higher voltage rating of the 35V capacitor means it can safely handle the same voltage as the 16V capacitor, plus additional voltage without risk of failure. Just ensure that the physical size and type (e.g., electrolytic vs. ceramic) are compatible with your circuit.

Can you replace a 165 vac capacitor with a 220 vac capacitor?

Yes, you can replace a 165 VAC capacitor with a 220 VAC capacitor, as the higher voltage rating means the 220 VAC capacitor can safely handle the voltage without risk of failure. However, ensure that the capacitance value (measured in microfarads) is the same or compatible with the circuit's requirements, as using a capacitor with a different capacitance can affect the circuit's performance. Always check for physical size and mounting compatibility as well.

Can you replace a capacitor that is smaller in size but same value?

If, by smaller in size, you mean physical size, then yes. You just need to keep the same capacitance and minimum voltage rating. Also, in a power supply filter application, you need to consider the maximum RMS current rating.

A: Polarized capacitors can be smaller in size as compared to a non polarized in the same capacity

Would it be ok to rplace the 25v 680 uf capacitor with a 25v 1000 uf on a xboard in a lcd tv?

Yes, you can replace a 25V 680µF capacitor with a 25V 1000µF capacitor in an LCD TV, as long as the voltage rating is the same or higher. The increased capacitance means the new capacitor can store more charge, potentially improving stability in some circuits. However, ensure that the physical size fits and that the circuit can handle the larger capacitance without adversely affecting performance. If in doubt, consult the device's specifications or a professional.

Is it OK to use an unpolarised capacitor in a circuit where there was originally a polarised one?

Well... Maybe yes, maybe no. It depends on two things. First, the physical size of the non-polarized capacitor may well be larger than the original size of the polarized capacitor, so it might not fit. Second, you have to consider the RMS current rating of the capacitor. Often, a polarized capacitor, such as an electrolytic capacitor, is intended to be used in a power supply, and is rated for a certain RMS current. A non-polarized capacitor, however, might not be rated for the same or higher RMS current, so it would not be able to handle the load.
