An "island" is a piece of land surrounded by a body of water. New York City's borough of Manhattan is an "island", as it is COMPLETELY surrounded by water. A "peninsula" is land surrounded by water on THREE sides, such as the State of Florida. San Francisco, CA is a "peninsula" and thus is bordered by water on three sides: the Pacific Ocean to it's West; the Pacific Ocean/San Francisco Bay Channel to it's North (the Ocean and the Bay are separated by the famous Golden Gate Bridge overhead); and The San Francisco Bay to it's East (the Bay Bridge connects San Francisco, CA to Oakland, CA on this side of it's waters). Land borders San Francisco's South side, specifically Daly City, CA.
