leads on battery, inductive on no 1 wire
You CANNOT use a timing light on that engine. ( won't work ) It requires an OBDII engine scanner to set the timing. The timing is computer controlled.
The timing on that year engine is computer controlled. It requires an engine scanner to set the timing. YOU CAN NOT USE A TIMING LIGHT.
That requires an OBD2 engine scanner to set the timing. You can NO longer use a timing light.
You can not use a timing light to set the timing on that year engine. The timing is computer controlled and it requires a engine scanner to set the timing.
You could put a vacuum gage on the engine and time it for peak vacuum. A timing light is still better.
Will engine run at all if the distributor is not wired correctly
The timing is electronic controlled. You MUST have an OBDII engine scanner to set the timing to specs. Timing light will not work.

trying to set base timing on a 97 Chevy c1500 with a 5.7 engine the wire to disconnect to set base timing is ?
To time your 1989 Chevy pickup, start by warming up the engine to its normal operating temperature. Locate the timing marks on the harmonic balancer and the timing tab on the engine block. Use a timing light to check the timing by connecting the light's clamp to the number one spark plug wire and aiming the light at the timing marks. Adjust the distributor as needed to align the marks with the specified timing degree, which is typically around 0° to 12° BTDC, depending on the engine model.
You can not set the timing with a timing light on that year engine. The timing is controlled by the PCM./ Power train control module. You must have an oBD2 engine scanner to set the timing. If the timing is off then the check engine light will be on.If you have not removed the distributor are moved it around for any reason then the engine timing is correct already. No need to adjust it. Computer does it.
