Look for a lever under the dashboard. Pull the lever and you should hear the bonnet (US = hood) release a little. Look at the front of the car and you should see a small safety cash sticking out of the grill. Pull on the latch and the bonnet should be released enough for you to lift it.
It is normally located in the centre console between the gear lever and handbrake lever.
On a 2006 Vauxhall Astra, the diagnostics socket is located below the hand brake lever, under the cover. The Astra has been around since 1979.
The lever is on the drivers side, below the steering wheel on the right side, near the pedals. Then pull the tab that has popped out at the front grill. If the lever is broken, you can try using 2 people to open the bonnet: Get someone to pull the release lever below the steering wheel TOWARDS them. While they are pulling it towards them you can go stand in front of the bonnet and press down firmly on the middle/end of the bonnet (above the emblem) until you hear a click. The tab in the grill should then pop out for you to pull, and the bonnet should open like normal when you pull the tab
To determine if the toilet lever arm is broken and needs repair, check if the lever is loose, not flushing properly, or making unusual noises. If any of these signs are present, the lever arm may be broken and require fixing.
There's a lever to the left of the steering column for adjustment.
Same thing happened to mine. Easiest way is to get a friend to pull the lever while you press down on the hood at the same time. You should hear it click and the black pull tab come out of the grill. This is the only way I've found to do it. Might take a few attempts to get the rhythm right.
Replace the lever with a new or good used one.

There is a small metal lever back by where the foot lever rotates (normally the release cable is hooked into it) Pull it forward and the foot lever will release - careful it doesn't smack you in the face!
