I replaced mine by dismantling the plate on the backside of the tailgate (the side that you walk on when the gate is down). There are a number of screws to take out. Once the plate is off the latch (mine was black plastic) is exposed and can be removed with 2 bolts. I got a big surprise when I took this very simple plastic latch to the Ford dealer and found they wanted $65 (Canadian) for a new one
