It depends on the symptoms. If you get poor heat from the heater and the temp gauge doesn't go up to normal, the thermostat may be stuck open. If the temp gauge reads hot quickly and the engine overheats, it may be a stuck closed thermostat. There could be many other reasons the engine is overheating and many are costly. Replacing the thermostat is a good place to start because the cost is minimal.
