This is not a D.I.Y. job. The best you can do is check the fluid and change (do not flush) if it dirty or smells like varnish. The filter could be plugged and this is best checked by pulling the transmission pan (this is an automatic, right). If that doesn't fix the problem, your only alternative is a dealer service department or transmission shop.

Are you sure that it's third it's not shifting into, and not fourth? The transmission is designed to not permit shifts into fourth (overdrive) until the engine and transmission have warmed up a bit.
