You are most likely talking about a torn CV Boot. This "constant velocity" rubber boot keeps the grease around your expensive CV joint. You'll have Four rubber boots total - two to each wheel on your Front wheel drive car. These boots are cheap depending if they are universal boots or OEM boots - both do the same job. When they tear you must replace them immediately ! There will be a tell tale grease stain on your driveway and grease all over the place under the engine compartment. The trick is to catch it as soon as possible so that a Mechanic can repack the CV joint with grease and place a new protective boot over it. If dirt or sand gets in and slowly destroys the steel joint there will be a lot of "play" and maybe vibration which can be extremely dangerous as you drive. Good luck !
