On older cars and all trucks use a coupler called an u-joint to join the trans, driveshaft and rearend together to power the car or truck. This coupler has tiny little bearings in it. When the bearings run out of grease or badly worn this will cause slop within the coupler. bottom line is it sounds like you need a new u-joint.
Crank Shaft.
Possible a failing U-joint.
hi i have a citroen saxo s reg 1.5D and it is knocking like a drive shaft but it dont do it all the time what do u think i should do shall i try a new drive shaft?
chances are your cv shaft is about to bust. the shaft itsself is about $120. if it's somethign you know how to do then do it a.s.a.p. if not then get it to a shop very soon! if it breaks then you will be unable to drive... good luck!
It will cause both vibration and a knocking noise The vibration may feel like it is at the rear of of the SUV but be careful to have the drive shaft checked.
Check your universal joints!
Could be a U-joint, wheel bearing, axle bearing.
The chances are the shaft in question is most likely made of aluminium. The "tube"of the shaft will carry "noise" of the drive train. The covering is there to help limit the noise and vibration. It is more for dampening noise than a structural covering.
it makes a knocking sound when u turn the wheels.
Typical U-Joint noise. Makes noise in reverse but not in drive. Check both front and rear U-joints of the drive shaft. If one is bad replace both. You do not want to go through R&R of the drive shaft twice.
There are several possibilities: the tires could be worn or have deep "lugs". If the tires have worn with "cupping" they could be making noise. If it isn't the tires, it could be the drive shaft or the drive-shaft carrier bearing if it's a 2-piece drive shaft. Another possibility is the differential. If the noise only happens when accelerating or decelerating it could be the differential ring/pinion gear alignment or wear to the ring/pinion gear.
The usual symptoms are a knocking or loud clicking noise from the front of the car when cornering. The noise is not normally noticeable when driving straight. Check the CV boot (the rubber cover round the drive shaft nearest to the front wheel) this will very often be the cause of the failure if it is split.
