Shimming any GM starter is likely going to assist in better performance of the starter. It cuts down on heat radiation and vibration when not in contact with the block.

Some do, some don't. The distributor, starter and alternator fit, the water pump does not. The mounting brackets are all different.

remove grn from bat. remove bat cable from starter solinoid. remove brn wire from starter solinoid. remove two 3/8bolts from starter to block. tilt nose of starter up and lower. this is most common.
