I usually put the top two rings, at the 10 oclock, and the 2 oclock positions, respectively. Remember to stagger the scrapers on the oil rings, and it really does not matter where they go. The compression rings should be put anywhere, but the thrust side of the cylinder. The outside of the motor is the thrust side. When the crank comes around, and the piston starts up, the angle of the rod, sideloads the piston, for an instant. This is why we go to a 6 inch rod in our race motors. It reduces this. Anyway, keep the comression ring gaps away from this side, and you will be cool.
