The compressor protects itself - by going into "lock out" and there isn't anything you can do about it till it cools down - patience is a virtue. You could turn on either the heat or the fan to help speed it up.

Run the fan only and it will thaw, usually in a few hours unless it is really iced up that would take overnight. Then have it checked out and the reason it froze corrected.

Why does a window AC freeze up and how can this issue be prevented or resolved?

A window AC can freeze up due to restricted airflow, low refrigerant levels, or a dirty air filter. To prevent this issue, regularly clean or replace the air filter, ensure proper airflow around the unit, and have the refrigerant levels checked by a professional. If the AC does freeze up, turn it off to allow it to thaw, then address the root cause of the problem.
