What or why? either a wire harness has become disconnected, a fuse blown or you have an older model with vacuum lines to direct the flow of air and this system is failing. the defroster is the default setting for the direction of flow and with out power or any other force applied to direct the flow, this is where it stays. this is all the info i can give without more from you.
