A Typical Air Compressor used in an air conditioning system is used to compress the vapor refrigerant to a higher pressure. If your compressor is not good enough to compress to the required pressure then your air con. will not provide a good cooling effect.
P.S. :
The temperature when changed on the main panel will directly change the pressure of your compressor which will affect the room temperature.
The compressor could be bad.
Because you are low on freon or bad pressure switch will also stop compressor to stay on.
sounds like your air conditioner compressor is bad.
thermostat could be bad, or location of it, air flow over it.
It sounds like you have a locked up a/c compressor or a bad a/c clutch..........
compressor contactor is bad. probably stuck in the closed position.
Bad belt. Worn tensioner. Bad compressor.
You may need to get your freon recharged or your A/C compressor might be bad.
1. A bad compressor. 2. A bad condenser fan. 3. Heat. 4. Old age...........
No. Usually air conditioning fails because the refrigerant leaks out or the compressor is bad.
If your heat and air conditioner doesn't work on your 1989 Cadillac Eldo and you have install a new compressor, check the thermostat. The thermostat may be stuck close or has gone bad.
Borrow a clamp on amp meter and check full load amps. If pulling full load amps then compressor condemned.
