This is a device that is commonly used on very large displacement engines and large steam engines.
The crankshaft connecting rod is attached at the slider end to a piston shaped object. This object is the attached bay another beam or rod to the piston the does the work.
In a steam engine this allows the upper connecting rod to be sealed so the piston can make power going in both directions. If you look at video of steam trains you can see this in action
