It obviously depends on the RPM, the faster your engine is running the earlier the spark has to occur in order to burn the fuel-air mix in a way that the following explosion reaches maximum pressure at about 8 degrees after the upper dead center of the crank.

If you plan on fixing your "ignition timing" because your engine is not running properly you should get a strobe which can be connected to the ignition cable. Now you open up the double-fly mass (should be possible from the top) and point the strobe at the mass. Now adjust the distributor cap until the mass seems to be optically standing still (Be careful not to turn it in the wrong direction or turn it too fast, as that would cause complete malfunction and leaving you unable to restart the engine!!) Now your "ignition timing" should be alright.

If I'm not mistaken this should do it. But im not totally sure because of the fact that for "ignition timing" ther are 4 different meanings in my language, all meaning a different part of the ignition system. In case I'm wrong and the jaguar has another ignition system as the one described post that immediately, as I will change my personal notes about that car as well as re-posting a proper repair guide.

Where is the starter on a 1985 Jaguar XJ6?

On a 1985 Jaguar XJ6, the starter is located on the passenger side of the engine, near the bottom of the engine block, just above the transmission.
