On most Ford Ranger models (i.e. before 2012) with an automatic transmission:
Back right hand side of the engine bay, passenger side, near firewall.
It characteristically has a colored handle (usually red or yellow) and will be labeled TRANS, or ATF.
Ford Rangers (not so old especially 2012 and later)
Later versions model has a sealed transmission system without a conventional dipstick. Fluid checks and refills should be performed under the vehicle in such situations (most often by a mechanic with a fill plug and scan tool to check temperature and fluid level).

The engine oil dipstick is on the drivers side of the 4.0 liter V6 engine in a 2000 Ford Ranger Also , the AUTOMATIC transmission fluid dipstick is to the passenger side of the engine , near the firewall , where the automatic transmission is bolted to the rear of the engine * the manual transmission does not have a dipstick , the fluid level is checked underneath the vehicle on the side of the transmission
According to the 2003 Ford Ranger Owner Guide : It came from the factory with ( Motorcraft MERCON - V , automatic transmission fluid ) * the type used should be engraved into the automatic transmission fluid level dipstick
Starting with the 2002 Ford Explorer ( 4 door ) the automatic transmission does not have a dipstick
2003 Ford Explorer 4 door models do not have an automatic transmission dipstick , Ford has a way of checking from underneath the Explorer
Looking from the front of the engine I believe it should be at the back of the engine by the firewall , just to the left of the engine for your automatic transmission dipstick
