It depends on what color of smoke and how it smells. The question is somewhat vague. However, if the smoke is white it is due to burning oil. Black is from burning gasoline. If the smoke is coming from the exhaust pipe then you either have leaking valves or oil is blowing past the piston rings, both are significant problems. If the smoke is coming from under the hood the most likely issue would be leaking valve covers or a leaking PCV valve. Hope this helps, if not give some specifics on the smoke and I can better help you.
because one of the valves arnt closing or opening properly
because the fan belt is burning
fabreeze!!
The smoke you see may be moisture/steam. The heater core is probably leaking engine coolant. If the "smoke" has a sweet smell to it, it's engine coolant. More info about the vehicle such as model and year would help.

Sorry to tell you but you have a blown head gasket, cracked head, or both. The white smoke is coolant entering the combustion chamber. STOP driving this vehicle or you will destroy the engine. You must have this repaired and it is not cheap.

The color of the smoke will help identify the problem. Blue smoke is engine or transmission oil. Black smoke, excess fuel. White smoke, engine coolant.
White smoke from your car when starting it can indicate condensation in the exhaust, which is common in colder weather and usually dissipates quickly. However, if the smoke persists or has a sweet smell, it could indicate coolant leaking into the engine, a sign of a blown head gasket or other serious issues. It's advisable to have the vehicle checked by a mechanic to prevent potential engine damage.
