If people took their responsibilities to the rest of the population seriously, this serious problem would not claim as many lives as it does. The legislation that is in effect is quite adequate. But unfortunately the courts seem to hand out such lenient punishments for driving under the influence, that there is no deterrent factor. In some European countries the consequences can be very severe. A 1 year driving ban then having to retaking a driving test (which takes up to three months) and a fine up to 5000 Euro really does have desired effect. Where as in other countries three endorsments and a £200 fine are the most common punishments. == == == == == == * Whether in the U.S., Canada or anywhere else if you know of someone that is driving drunk then it's your duty to phone the police, give the license # of the vehicle that person is driving and let them take their lumps. If you don't and they end up killing themselves, or worse yet killing an innocent person (possibly even a child) then you are classified as an enabler. In British Columbia, Canada about two years ago legislation's was thinking of the Host or Hostess being responsible for their guests driving home drunk. Obviously this law sunk to the bottom and thank heavens it did. If I feel one of my guests has had too much to drink I suggest they stay over-night; I try to get the keys from them or offer to call them a cab (at my expense!) More than not drunks feel they can drive and refuse all offers. If this is the case I'd turn that person in! Call me a rat, whatever, but I don't want to be part of this person killing themselves or anyone else. I've thankfully only had to do it once. My name was not given out so this person still doesn't know who did it. Drunks feel that they are in control of themselves and you will NEVER convince them otherwise. They are a disaster waiting to happen. If anything, don't just think of the idiot driving drunk, but the many people out there this person could kill. * If you are with this drunk person, then give him/her more drinks to consume so you make sure that the person blacks out or falls asleep. It would be easier to get him into a cab or a taxi and prevent him from driving. That would avoid being caught with a DUI and causing an accident.

* Take their car keys away. tie them to a chair

What is the difference of felony drunk driving and misdemeanor drunk driving?

Misdemeanor drunk driving is when you are stopped by the police for erratic driving and it is obvious to the police that you have been drinking, and it is your first drunk driving offense. You are charged with felony drunk driving when there are aggravating circumstances such as causing an accident or bodily harm to a person other than yourself, whether that person is a passenger in your car or not. This is a felony regardless of whether it is your first offense. It is also a felony when you are driving drunk while a child under the age of 16 is a passenger in the car.
