If the patch must go over an irregular surface, like an elbow, you may need to use silicone sealant to seal the spaces between the rivets.
Be careful when drilling the duct that you do not press hard on the drill, as it could cause the duct to collapse. If you do not have any of the tools needed to perform this repair, consider calling a heating and air conditioning specialist.
