Switching your automatic transmission into a lower gear, to utilize engine braking and maintain a lower speed can be a safe way to descend a steep incline. It is always a way to potentially save money on brake pads, however with that advantage comes some risk. Automatic transmissions are very complex, and thus expensive to repair and replace. If your vehicle is equipped with overdrive, switch it off when downshifting (some vehicles do this automatically when the gear selector has no button around it, and the position in which you normally leave it in is a D with a circle around it.) Heat is the number one enemy of all things, and if you plan to shift into a lower gear to descend a steep hill regularly, it may be a worthwhile investment to have an aftermarket Transmission Fluid cooler installed (even if your vehicle is already equipped with one from the factory.) The larger capacity heat exchanger will allow for cooler operating temperatures under the most demanding circumstances such as downshifting, or accelerating. Doing so, may prolong the life of your transmission and provide you with a less expensive alternative to replacing your brake pads every few thousand miles for those of you who live on top of a mountain. Remember to have your automatic transmission fluid and filter replaced at regular intervals, especially under severe operating conditions such as the ones specified in this post.

Inhibitor switch reduces engine power to avoid shock while automatic transmission changing gears

In manual transmission you have to manually switch gears in your car's gearbox. This is done by usings clutch pedal and gearstick. Car with manual transmission is much more responsive to you're driving and is considered far superior to automatic transmission.
You can't shift gears on an automatic transmission because, as it is called, it's automatic! You don't need to shift, it does it for you. == == Maybe the question should be "Why is my automatic transmission not shifting through gears for me as it should?" Could it be a fairly simlpe fix or am I losing my transmission? Yeah Dopey!
An automatic transmission uses a series of planetary gears to switch between high-power, low-speed modes and high-speed, low-power modes. The related link to How Stuff Works! provides more detail.
When driving a car with an automatic transmission up a steep hill it is not necessary to shift gears. The car will do that on its own when necessary.
An automatic transmission is a type of car transmission that shifts gears on its own. Therefore, cars with automatic transmissions will not have a clutch pedal and will have a selector lever as opposed to a shift knob.
An automatic transmission is a mechanical transmission which shifts gears automatically in response to speed and/or load rather than requiring someone to do so manually.
Did you use the right transmission fluid or did you forget to maintain your transmission otherwise, your gears are broken and needed to be replaced.. chances are you need a new transmission.
There are many benefits of owning a car with automatic transmission. These benefits would include the automatic shifting of gears as the vehicle moves.
Automatic Dodge Neons had a 3-speed automatic transmission.
