Depends on the veichle and how much it is worth. Lets say that a fuel pump in a brand new gave out, it would be worth replacing. Now on an old clunker, its probably not worth replacing.

Oil pump 2002 gmc 1500 v6
Probably more than it's worth short of replacing the engine. Oil pumps are seldom the problem, usually if the oil pump is actually worn out, the entire engine is shot as well.
when replacing the oil pump on a 98 ford winstar 3.0 liter engine do I have to pack the gears on the new oil pump
Oil pump has failed or the oil pressure sending unit is bad.
Near the bottom of the oil pan. There isn't really much point in replacing the oil pump without checking out the bearings. Get a little plastiguage and check the bearing tolerances. You can't do any good replacing the oil pump if the bearings are worn.
If the oil pump has failed...yes definitly. your crank has been starved for oil and has worn or spun the bearings. time for a lower engine rebuild and new oil pump.
The cost to replace the oil pump on a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport ranges from $300 and $500. Replacing the oil pump requires the oil pan to be removed.
check the oil level in the hpop.
If you have the 2.7L and antifreeze is getting into the oil the water pump may have failed. The water pump on the 2.7 is internal and driven by the timing chain. The other probable cause is a failed headgasket.
A good sign that your oil pump is going bad is a decrease in oil pressure, though this can sometimes be fixed by replacing the oil pressure sensor. However, if you are experiencing decreased oil pressure readings along with lifters knocking it is most likely not the sensor, but the pump itself. From previous experience with failed oil pumps these are the steps I would take; start your truck, check the oil pressure, pop the hood and rev the engine, if you hear a repetitive metal knocking noise coming from the cylinder heads along with decreased or no oil pressure, most likely your oil pump has failed and is unable to push oil back through your engine. This is a serious problem and if this is what is happening it is recommended that you do not drive the truck or rev the engine anymore, as this can cause serious damage to your engine.
