your a/c system is used in hot and cold weather. obviously when it's hot out, but in the winter your a/c acts as a dehumidifier to remove humidity from the inside of the vehicle to keep the windows from moisture and frosting up on the inside only when in the defrost mode. rule of thumb your a/c in hot months is Usuallyl 25 to 35 degrees cooler than the ambient outside air temp. if it falls in this area your o.k. in the winter months if moisture and frosting is experianced inside you may want to have it checked out. as for maintenance keep the evaporator and heater core clean, keep an eye on the compressor drive belt. as for service of any other components they are pretty much service free they work or they dont.
