Check your wheel bearings, or you might need a wheel alignment
There are a few different things which could cause wheel shaking and thumps when hitting a big bump. The most likely cause however, is that the struts need to be replaced.
Could be a number of reasons: Worn-out shocks, wheels out of balance, worn-out tires (or all of the above)
Usually when the steering wheel shakes badly while driving it could mean a few things. If it shakes only when you are applying the brakes, this means you have warped rotors and they will need to be turned or replaced. If it shakes just while driving, it could be that you have 1 or more tires that are unbalanced. Check this first before proceeding. It can also indicate that a wheel alignment and perhaps steering linkage repairs are necessary.
Most likely your alignment is out of whack or bad struts. Could also be the wheels need balancing.
Have the tires and wheels checked. It could be a bent wheel or a damaged tire.
Could be rotor "out of round" and needs to be re-surfaced or replaced. Possibly caused by over-tightening and not torquing upon installation. Could be a "frozen" brake caliper. That needs to be replaced
i have same explorer and my shakes and jerks especially at a light.... what have you replaced on yours?
This sound is cause when the strut top are worn out the need to be replaced can cause coil springs to break. They are pretty expessive 183.00 a side.
If it only happens when you accelerate the most likely cause is an axle.
If a car shakes when you press the gas pedal but sounds good, it could indicate issues such as unbalanced tires, misaligned wheels, or worn-out suspension components. Another possibility is a problem with the drivetrain, such as a failing CV joint or driveshaft. Additionally, engine-related issues like a misfire or improper fuel delivery could cause vibrations. It's advisable to have a mechanic diagnose the problem to ensure safety and proper function.
As long as the overall diameter is the same you can go down to a 14 inch wheel.
1. Your wheels are off by a huge number on balancing 2. Either steering setup or suspension setup needs work 3. Engine and tranny mounts can cause problems as well 4. Bad tires I experienced violent vibrations while driving down the highway. I could see the trim vibrating, sun visor flipping and evrything else looked drunk! I took it to C. Harper KIA. I had them check the entire front end, I turned out to be 3 out of 4 wheels needed balancing and either of the two tires needed replaced. I am still driving on bad tires but I will get them replaced this Friday
