Depends, if ur purchasing a new or re built info comes in the crate. If not its only about 50 steps. but first is to deii connect the batery. then drain fluids. take off hood, remove all "first come parts" and do not re use old hoses or filters..., but continue to remove all things attached to the engine. No specific order, just b sure to keep track of all ur nuts and bolts. because one similar bolt in the wrong spot can realllllly throw you off. But continue removing your parts, take out the fan for more room and the tool ul need is a vibration dampned puller. it obviously pulls off the vibration dampner. then when u have all the stuff holding the engine to the frame (or mounts) dismantled taake the old pile of crap out. ohh yes and unbolt the headers of manifolds if u have them on. then wash everything under the hood. get all that greas out. It takes alot of degreaser and elbow grees, but do it. Then get some basic spray paint and cover everything to prevent rust. If you repaint headers/manifolds get high heat paint. like 7bux a can. then cherry pick ur new baby (Chevy, ofcouorse painted Chevy Orange...) and put it in, first is first, make sure ur fly wheel is on b4 you put the engine back in. On 72 chevys u need to have 6 bolts from the engine to the tranny. (stock motor) then is will go in pretty smooth. keep ur engine lifted on the picker until u have it securly on the motor mounts. then rebolt the headers, and do not for get ANY GASKETS, because if u do u will knkow it. and it wont be any fun. so... start puting all your good stuff back on the engine, power sterring pump, alternator, starter, do not reuse same water pump, hoses, fuel filter, antifreez, and belts. And obvious stuff, like oil, (lol everey1 should know that) then its always best to freshly re carburate your engine with a new carb, and distrubuter, along with a regular oul, because ull b dumping it out after about 1,000miles. but its just standard cleasning. And always AT ALL TIMES, cover any holes or openings on your engine so nothing falls in it prior to instillation. That's will b a frigg'n night mare! tape usually works. Then after all is connected mix antifreez w/ water 50/50. If ur using the old radiator ull need to flush it by just adding water running the engine and taking off the botom hose of the radiator. repear until water is clear, not brown.. eeew. then when all is hooked up keep you engine in low gear... Drive2, b easy but not too easy if your breaking it in. Dont maintain high speeds, it could break somthing unseated. but dnt put put around. give it some juice, go up a little hill, use pure horse power and torque, not speedy gonzales. After the longest 800-1,000 miles u have ever driven replenish your oil, check for leaks and if any broblems... diagnose prior to assumption. Take care of the original problem, it may not even be you engine that's bad. but if its just old then have fun and b carefull. And always remember "Engines were made to work" that is all they will ever do, so make it purr. and always watch oil pressure, temp of engine and gas.. haha, i say that because i run out quiet often and I look and look and look for y my truck wont start wen all i need is go go juice. Have fun-
