It could be as simple as a stopped up fuel filter.

There are several things that can cause a slow response to acceleration. The most common cause is a dirty air filter. A dirty fuel filter can also cause the problem.
Dirty fuel injectors or spark plugs
Start at the fuel filter. It may be clogged.

A bad o2 sensor can cause this problem in a car. A bad fuel pump, fuel filter or fuel line will also cause hesitation during acceleration.
Check the battery cables and ensure that they are CLEAN and TIGHT. That is the most overlooked thing.
Possibly the pressure cycling switch.
The 2005 Chevrolet Malibu axle nut torque specification is 60 pounds. Over torque in the axle nut will cause the will bearing to fail.
Replace the spark plugs and wires. Replace the fuel filter.
If the check engine light is illuminated, start with scanning for codes.
