A 1997 Suburban may idle up and down due to several reasons, including a vacuum leak, which can disrupt the air-fuel mixture, or a malfunctioning idle air control (IAC) valve that regulates engine idle speed. Dirty or faulty spark plugs, a clogged air filter, or issues with the fuel system can also cause irregular idling. Additionally, problems with the engine’s sensors, such as the throttle position sensor or mass airflow sensor, may lead to inconsistent idle behavior. It's advisable to check these components to diagnose and resolve the issue.
incorrect operation of choke choke not shutting off after warm up
The Idle Air Control valve located in the throttle body.
It may be in need of a good tune up.
Its in your owner's manual. My 1998 runs about 40 PSI on Highway and 30 PSI at idle. Goes down a little when warmed up. Was a little stronger when new.
A car may idle up and down due to "Improper fuel mixture". (The fuel in the car may consist of an un-even balance of air or gas). However, there are a few other ways a car can idle up and down.
idle speed controll or tps throttle sensor
If both vehicles have the same motor it should match up. You may have to order or make an adapter for the wiring.
Check/ replace the TPS if the idle is up and down.
When my '97 Dakota did that, I ended up replacing the idle air control valve. That cured it .................
I a 97 pick up and the power steering pully is pressed on and pressed off
A 1990 GMC Suburban idling up and down and cutting out could be caused by several issues, including a vacuum leak, which can disrupt the air-fuel mixture, or a failing idle air control valve (IAC) that regulates engine idle speed. Additionally, problems with the fuel system, such as a clogged fuel filter or failing fuel pump, may lead to inconsistent fuel delivery. Lastly, ignition system issues, such as worn spark plugs or faulty ignition coils, could also contribute to these symptoms. Proper diagnostics would be necessary to pinpoint the exact cause.
The IAC (idle air control) at the throttle body is usually the problem.
