my jeep Cherokee Laredo did the same thing, it was the oxegen sensor, smelled like gas when you drive it and spit and sputter, especially at take off.
There could be a few causes for a car to spit and sputter on acceleration. One common cause would be the engine not getting enough fuel, so it could be a problem in the fuel line, fuel filter, or fuel pump.
Possible clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump.
Ok for one, spit does not smell like anything ..........and two, they smell like any plane flower.
it will spit and sputter or miss or just not have no power at all very sluggish
i have a 1197 Nissan altima, it keeps cutting out and acts like its going to die . changed the fuel filter it was like chocolate

Air and fuel setting out of adjustment on years gone by; on today's auto's probably a sensor.
sounds like it is need of a tune up.
An '87 Caravelle may spit and sputter after warming up due to several potential issues. Common causes include a faulty ignition system, such as worn spark plugs or ignition coils, which can misfire as the engine heats up. Additionally, a clogged fuel filter or issues with the fuel injectors can disrupt fuel flow, leading to inconsistent engine performance. Lastly, vacuum leaks or a malfunctioning sensor, like the mass airflow sensor, can also contribute to these symptoms.
The carburetor needs calibration or changing of possibly defective part, for example, gasket or needles.
