Is numbness at the tip of your tongue normal after a tongue piercing?

One thing the "doctor" didn't think of is trauma. Sometimes, your brain will block pain completely by making a certain area of your body numb. I would wait a day or two but if feeling does not come back I would remove the piercing and then wait another day or two and if still no feeling then you need to see a doctor.

It is not normal for your tongue to be numb after piercing. Try exercising the tongue by rolling it and moving it around, if the feeling doesn't come back go see a doctor, the piercer could have hit a nerve in your tongue. I had my tongue pierced but no I didn't experience numbness. If the feeling doesn't come back soon I would go see a doctor, because you have nerves and veins under there that may have been affected. Not to sound like a "Mom" but these problems are why tongue piercing are illegal now and hard to come by. I had to take mine out because it was making a hole on the roof of my mouth from rubbing. So just be careful!! ----------------Tongue piercing is not illegal everywhere, nor is it a majorly dangerous practice. The reason you get problems with rubbing holes inside your mouth has more to do with having the wrong jewelry. BE CAUTIOUS of those piercing outside of an established studio and make sure that YOU, yourself keep your piercing clean. Yes there are nerves in your tongue that can be damaged but it's rare.

Well generally with the post piercing swelling, it's hard to tell what is considered normal. In a standard center line tongue piercing, placed approx 3/4" back from the tip of the tongue normal even swelling is to be expected. In the center line piercing you are only piercing connective tissue that joins the right and left sides of the tongue. So the possibility of nerve damage is fairly low (note I am not saying "no risk", there is always a risk when piercing the tongue, but I am talking about a professionally performed piercing) If you have any other form of tongue piercing then the risk becomes even higher, so numbness and possible permanent damage is a real ever present risk. The tongue is the strongest muscle in the human body and a very important one at that, so serious thought needs to be put into getting a piercing before actually getting it done to ensure you are making a good decision. Once it's pierced, there is no way to repair the damage done to it, it's a one shot deal and there is no turning back.

When I had mine done no they didn't numb it first but they did put a clamp on my tongue before it was done to it was so quick it didn't even hurt when they did it, I really sisn't have any pain until then next day when I had a little swelling but it was gone by that night, don't have it done when you are drunk as alchol thins your blood any you may experience bleeding

No, it should not be numb.

Most piercers make you sign a disclosure releasing them from responsibility should any injury or issues happen during the piercing. In the case of a tongue piercing, my piercer told me before she started that there are nerves that run through the tongue, and there is a chance that the piercing could injure or sever one of these nerves, and she made sure I was fully aware of this risk before we proceeded. It is therefore likely that there is nerve damage in your tongue.

I would recommend you do not remove the piercing and contact your physician to ascertain what is causing the numbness. It is likely that the numbness will be permanent if nerve damage is involved.

It would be hard to tell if it's numb due to the swelling that occurs post piercing. So if it's still numb consult your doctor, if a nerve has been hit, the damage is done and can't be repaired.

yeah it will feel stiff mine did when i woke up in the morning and a bit after the piercing but they did not numb mine tho so yeah it should be stiff because of the swelling in your tongue
