Indie usually refers to a type of music, which encompasses any artists not signed by a corporate label. Usually people think of alternative rock/Folk Music, but it is really anything that is not mainstream. Before the word "hipster" was commonly used, indie could also refer to the dress and lifestyle of people that listened to this genre of music. However, now we use the word hipster to refer to a person who lives and dresses alternatively, to be general. Many hipsters are greatly interested in art and music, blog on tumblr, and shop at stores like Urban Outfitters.
