No, it will die.

That's not necessarily true. If it is not a ragged tear that has injured the outer layers and bark, then it may survive if not attacked by insects or diseases. It will be deformed and may succumb to some disease later on in it's growth cycle. If it was damaged after it has gone dormant, or is in the process of going dormant in the winter, there is a greater chance that it will die. Sometimes if a tree is in the process of going dormant and is injured, it will stop going dormant to try to repair itself, then it may freeze up and be "winter-killed."
