My husband has been on topamax for about 4 years. He now has osteoporosis and a parathyroid adenoma with constant severe bone pain, extreme exhaustion and night sweats. As soon as we took him off of topamax his pain level improved. I know that topamax can cause osteoporosis. If he weren't a 49 year old fit male, I'm sure they'd just assume the osteoporosis was primary, rather than secondary to a parathyroid problem. I'm convinced everything is related to the topamax, but I have no proof.
The parathyroid hormone stimulates the absorption of calcium from the bone.
there are four parathyroid glands
Parathyroid glands are dipped in back in thyroid gland. They are endrocrine glands.
Tetanus (Clostrudium tetani toxin) gets its name from its ability to cause tetany. The most common cause is low serum calcium levels which can be caused by parathyroid hormone or vitamin D deficiency. Hyperventilating or other acid-base problems can shift the binding of calcium and cause effectively low levels and tetany. Low magnesium and excess potassium can also do it.
The function of the parathyroid glands is to secrete parathyroid hormone, which causes the release of the calcium present in bone to extracellular fluid (ECF). The ECF is the fluid found outside cells in all body tissues. PTH does this by activating the production of osteoblasts, special cells of the body involved in the production of bone and slowing down osteoclasts, other specialized cells involved in the removal of bone.
I have had a need to break my teeth. hold them together so hard until they break. Only on topamax.
I don't know if Topamax is the cause yet--but I developed a mysterious rash on my inner thigh after beginning to take Topamax. I have switched laundry detergent, body wash, have not started eating anything new lately, so can't figure out any other possible cause. Rash is listed on the literature as a "rare" side effect of Topamax. I take 200mg per day.
Topamax is often used as a migraine preventive. Side effects may include fatigue.
Abruptly stopping anything but a very minimal dosage of Topamax can lead to problems. Check with your neurologist.
ovaries and the parathyroid
There is no link between thyroid problems and sciatica. There is link between parathyroid problem and sciatica.
My research has found no links between topanax and a positive ANA.
Calcitonin is released from thyroid gland in response to hypercalemia. On the other hand, parathyroid hormone- as you guessed - is from parathyroid gland in response to low levels of blood calcium. Which will cause calcium to be released from bone into blood to compensate.
You really shouldn't just quit Topamax cold turkey. Topamax is a med that has to be tapered off slowly just as you were put on the medecine hopefully. If you were to stop suddenly you could actually cause a siezure which could be very dangerous for you and the baby!
The parathyroid glands are located behind the thyroid gland and are often accidentally removed with the thyroid in a thyroidectomy. The parathyroid gland makes parathyroid hormone (PTH), which normally causes an increase in blood calcium levels. If the parathyroid is lost, so is the PTH, and thus the blood calcium is lower.
A parathyroid scan is sometimes called a parathyroid localization scan or parathyroid scintigraphy.
No it can not. Topamax, it to ward of headaches. OB will approve.
