Why do some people prefer to eat foods that are not genetically engineered?

People have genetically modified foods to make them more insect-repellant, to give higher crop yields, to give products with more appealing qualities (flavour, texture, shelf life); this provides benefits for both producer and consumer. Some crop have been modified to be resistant to certain brands of herbicides, so that the plants are not affected when the farmer sprays the area for weeds (see the Monsanto website). Other modifications take the form of plants that are modified to be resistant to saline soils, or drought conditions. These benefits can increase the yields of crops in poorer or arid parts of the world which are normally susceptible to food shortages.

Why do people prefer to eat foods that are not genetically engineered?

Because the long term affects of eating genetically engineered plants are unknown.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of frankenfood?

Modifying food crops through genetic methods results in products with remarkable advantages like longer shelf life and resistance to pests when they are grown in the field. The primary motive for genetically engineering food crops is to increase yield. Since this process involves the insertion of foreign genes into wild type crop genomes, the uninformed people in the press have coined the term 'frankenfoods' to describe genetically modified crops. Here are some of the advantages of genetically modified foods: * Greater yield (wheat, rice, tobacco) * Pest resistance (corn) * Longer shelf life (vegetables) * slow ripening of fruits (apples, oranges) * Foods supplemented with essential dietary components - beta carotene rice (golden rice) * Better taste retention (flavr-saver tomatos) and some of the disadvantages: * public acceptance - people approach these genetically engineered foods with a lot of scepticism. Although the scientists who created them are confident about their safety.

What is meant by the word organic?

If you mean organic food, then this is the answer : Organic foods are grown foods such as patatoes, or apples that grow in soil without chemicals or products with acids to help grow the food. Why is 'non-genetically modified whole soybeans' preferred as an ingredient for a food product?

In general, non-genetically modified foods of any type (including whole soybeans) are preferred to the their genetically modified counterparts because the long-term health effects of consuming genetically modified foods have not been properly documented yet. What are the advantages and disadvantages of genetically modified foods?

Are organic foods geneticly modified?

Organically grown foods are not (trans)genetically modified, meaning they are not what is considered GMOs.

When did genetically modifying foods begin?

The first genetically modified food began in 1994. Scientist genetically modified a tomato which didn't ripen so quickly after it was picked.
