Amount of specialized cells, called differentiation, which form tissues which form organ systems and allow more complex organisms to develop and survive. A single-celled organism's cell must do everything. As cells combine to perform specific funtions for the good of the entire organism, we begin to have tissue formation, as in the jellyfish which has stinging cells for obtaining food, digestive cells for digesting and distributing nutrients to the entire organism, and reproductive cells for the propagation of the organism.

The bigger the amount of specialization of cells into tissues performing separate, specialized functions for the benefit of the entire organism, the more advanced and the larger the organism can become.

How does the growth of an organism occur?

Growth of an organism is characterized by an increase in the size of its body. This occurs due to accumulation of food substances in the cells which in turn increases the volume of the protoplasm in the cells. This increase in volume of cells results in growth. However, its necessary to understand the fact that cells do not increase in their volume indefinitely. After a considerable period of time they divide into two through processes such as mitosis. These divided cells again increase in volume and redivide after they become large. Bassicaly, the organism eats and gets nutrients from what it eats which causes it to grow.

Growth due to an increase in cell number is called?

Growth that is due to an increase in cell number results from an increased rate of mitotic cell division and is termed hyperplasia. Consequently, growth of a tissue or organ due to an increase in cell size is termed hypertrophy.
