Amino acids are the basic building blocks. I think the question that is supposed to be asked is "How are the basic building blocks in proteins separated?".

Amino acids are the building blocks, monomers, of proteins, polymers. Any monomers in any nutrient are broken apart through hydrolysis reactions. In the process, a water molecule is split and an oxygen and a hydroxide "cap" the ends of the strand.
