Tiny tubes in the respiratory system, such as bronchioles and alveolar ducts, are connected to the air sacs, or alveoli. These tubes help in the exchange of gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and blood vessels. The air sacs in the lungs facilitate this gas exchange process by increasing the surface area available for diffusion.
This condition is known as emphysema, which is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is typically caused by long-term exposure to irritants such as cigarette smoke, leading to irreversible damage to the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. Symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing.

There is a left and right main bronchus dividing off the windpipe (trachea), each bronchus undergoes several divisions (about 16-17) becoming smaller and thinner before ending on the air sacs (alveoli), which provide the interface between the airways and the blood vessels so that gas exchange can take place.
