"Compound eyes" are made up of lots of little eyes, each with its cornea, lens, and photoreceptor cells for distinguishing brightness and colour. They give the insect a wide field of view and, although they are extremely poor at picking out detail like a human's eyes can, they are excellent at detecting movement.

There are two types of compoundeye;

* Ones that form apposition images

* and ones that form superposition images.

Apposition favours sharpness and sacrifices brightness, while superposition favours brightness, but sacrifices sharpness.
