How does a vacine work?

Vaccines work by injecting you with a small dose of either a weak or dead form of a virus/disease. Your body naturally tries to kill the virus by creating anti-bodies. Your body remembers how to create these antibodies so that when the real virus attacks, it can fight back killing the disease before it does any harm.

Why cant you get measles more than once?

In rare cases a person can. Generally though, it is a one time deal. Measles are caused by a virus. After a healthy body is exposed to a virus it will create an anti-virus to fight it. When the person is recovered from the illness they will be immune. This is also how the measles vaccine works. The vaccine introduces a small amount of the virus for the body to create immunity to.

Is chickenpox an emerging disease?

Yes, chickenpox is a disease caused by varicella zoster virus. There are now effective vaccines against this virus, which prevent the disease. Chickenpox is not a dangerous disease for healthy children; but it is a much more serious disease for teens and adults, infants, pregnant women and immune-compromised people of any age. Interestingly, if you get chickenpox, the virus continues to reside in your body for the rest of your life, hiding out in the nervous system. It can suddenly become active years or decades later, erupting in an itching burning rash called Shingles. The rash usually disappears in about 2 weeks, but the itching and burning can continue for weeks because of nerve inflammation caused by the varicella eruption.
