If you consider the boundary of the cell to be the cell membrane, which is selectively permeable, matter can be exchanged between the cell components and the surrounding environment of the cell. This fits the definition of an open system. Matter can be exchanged with the surroundings.

I believe the answer is that AP Bio at Naperville North High School is extremely hard. I have been having difficulty with this question as well.
