In temperate lattitudes, during the winter many plants shed their leaves, many simply die, and there is less plant life for herbivores to eat, and therefore there will also be fewer herbivores for carnivores to eat. When food is scarce, animals will travel to other places where food is more abundant. Aside from the issue of food, it is also true that many animals do not do well in very cold temperatures, and can die of hypothermia if they do not seek a warmer climate.

Let's say you're an animals that eat insects, and you're somewhere where winter means snow, ice and serious cold. Not many insects around then.

To keep from starving one method is to simply move (=migrate) to where winter isn't as bad, and where there are still bugs to eat.

If you can't move fast and far enough to find bugs, another option is to try to sleep(=hibernate) through it all. Sleeping means you won't use up as much energy, so if you're good and fat when you go to sleep in autumn, that can take you through until spring when there are new bugs to eat.
