In temperate lattitudes, during the winter many plants shed their leaves, many simply die, and there is less plant life for herbivores to eat, and therefore there will also be fewer herbivores for carnivores to eat. When food is scarce, animals will travel to other places where food is more abundant. Let's say you're an animals that eat insects, and you're somewhere where winter means snow, ice and serious cold. Not many insects around then.

To keep from starving one method is to simply move (=migrate) to where winter isn't as bad, and where there are still bugs to eat.
