I can say to them that a colour is the same shade of green as the postboxes in Ireland, and they will know exactly what i mean. They may have difficulty imagining a new colour which they never saw before.... but they'll never know if they are right in what they imagine. If I describe a new paint colour to such a person and say "It is a lighter shade of green than X and has a bit more red in it" neither of us can know if the person know 'understands' the colour I described.
