A sponge is a consumer.
The consumer at the top of the energy pyramid is the tertiary consumer. This organism feeds on secondary consumers, which in turn feed on primary consumers at the lower levels of the pyramid. Tertiary consumers are often at the highest trophic level in a food chain or web.
A producer is always at the beginning of a food chain. A producer will always be a plant. A primary consumer eats the producer. The secondary consumer eats the primary consumer. The scavenger comes next (if it gets there before the decomposer.) The decomposer will always be last. Example: (where there is a scavenger) grass --> rabbit --> fox --> vulture --> mushroom producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, scavenger, decomposer
consumer
The organism that feeds on producers is called a herbivore. Herbivores consume plant-based food sources as their primary source of energy and nutrients.
