New Zealand native forests are considered rain-forest, because of the variety of tree species in it. [Rain forest does not mean it is wet!] Almost all the trees are evergreen, (only a couple of exceptions), and has contributions from the tropics (palm and vine families), South America (the beech family of Gondwanna connection). NZ has almost no needle-leaved trees such as spruce, pine, though there is a genera of Drachophyllum that does have needle-like leaves, but it is a flowering shrub or tree.
