It could be "Oak apples" which are galls on the trees made by the gall wasp. Another possibility is fungus.
Answer
They are definitely galls not fungus.
I have Golf-ball sized green pods on oak tree that are NOT galls. They are hollow except for what looks like a very small green flower inside.I'm clueless as to what they are.
Yes you can, although the Tanins don't taste very nice, and can damage your liver in large quantities. x
The butterfly you are referring to is likely the "Malachite butterfly" (Siproeta stelenes). It has large green wings with black edges and white markings that resemble leaves. These butterflies are found in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas.
Trees that drop large green fruit in the fall could be pawpaw trees (Asimina triloba) or Osage orange trees (Maclura pomifera). Pawpaw trees produce large, greenish-yellow fruit that is custard-like in texture and sweet in taste. Osage orange trees produce large, green fruit that is inedible for humans but is commonly eaten by wildlife like squirrels and birds.

It might not be the biggest but I found a 1' diameter acorn whichis pretty large.

The meaning of the acorn and the pumpkin is do not question the way the world works because God knows better than we do. Before the peasant took a nap under the acorn tree, he laughed at God's creation. He stated that a tree as big as an acorn tree surely would have been better fit for something large, like pumpkins, to grow on. However, he later found that he was mistaken. An acorn dropped on his nose, causing it to bleed, making him realize that had it been a pumpkin, he would not have been as fortunate. That is why at the end of the poem he says,"God knows His business after all, no question!", because he realized he does not know more than God does. and he should not question Him.

No, raw acorns are not safe to eat as they contain tannins that can be toxic if consumed in large quantities. Before consuming an acorn, it should be properly processed by leaching or boiling to remove the tannins and make it safe to eat.
