New England and Massachusetts have a lot of deciduous forests.

It's not a place, it's a type of forest.

There are evergreen trees and deciduous trees.

Evergreens, obviously, are green all year round and don't lose their leaves or needles (eg, pine). Deciduous trees are the ones that lose their leaves in autumn (eg oak, birch, sycamore etc) so a deciduous forest would be a forest mainly made up of these trees.

What trees lose their leaves in the winter?

Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the autumn. Mostly these are broadleaf trees, but some conifers are also deciduous. In New Zealand, there are only a couple of species that mostly lose their leaves in the winter. The generalization that broadleaf trees lose their leaves in the winter is a northern hemisphere misbelief.
